Mérida, known by the locals as "The White
City", is the capital of the state of
Yucatán. It is in every sense the leading town of the peninsula, and remarkably calm and certainly
likeable for all its thousands of visitors.
Every street in the centre boasts a colonial church or mansion, while the plazas are alive with market stalls and
free entertainment. Good beaches are always within easy reach, but above all it's the ideal base for a visit to
the great Maya sites of Uxmal and
Chichén Itzá. This surely will leave you with a life time memory. Any exploration of
Mérida should naturally begin in the Plaza Mayor.
The hub of the city's life, it's ringed by some of
Mérida's oldest buildings, dominated by the Cathedral of San Idelfonso Mérida's market, a huge
place, is far most the tourists major attraction. Other attractions includes The Paseo de Montejo, Museo de
Antropología e Historia, Monumento a la Patria. To do the Grand Tour properly, you should visit the Parque de las
Americas, on Av Colón, which is planted with trees from every country on the
American continent, and get back to the centre via the
Parque Centenario.
